LIFE INSURANCE IS THE POLICY. WHAT IT CAN HELP PROTECT IS PERSONAL.
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, making it a good time to think about something that can easily get pushed to the bottom of the to-do list:
The financial protection of the people who depend on you.
We insure our homes. We insure our vehicles. We protect many of the things we've worked hard to build.
But life insurance is different.
It's not really about the policy sitting in a file. It's about what that policy may help the people you care about continue to manage if you're no longer there.
For families in New Braunfels and surrounding Texas Hill Country communities, September is a useful reminder to ask:
Does my life insurance still fit my life?
YOUR LIFE MAY HAVE CHANGED SINCE YOU LAST LOOKED AT YOUR COVERAGE
Think about where you were when you first purchased life insurance.
Now think about today.
Maybe you:
Bought a home
Got married
Welcomed a child
Changed jobs
Started a business
Took on a larger mortgage
Increased your household income
Became responsible for someone else's financial needs
Have children approaching college
Haven't reviewed your beneficiaries in years
None of these changes automatically means you need more life insurance.
But they can be good reasons to review what you currently have.
WHAT CAN LIFE INSURANCE HELP WITH?
Life insurance may provide a death benefit to the beneficiaries named in the policy upon the insured's death, subject to the policy's terms, conditions and exclusions.
Beneficiaries may use those funds for financial needs such as:
🏠 THE HOME
Mortgage payments and other housing expenses may continue even when a household loses an income.
👨👩👧👦 EVERYDAY FAMILY EXPENSES
Groceries, utilities, transportation, childcare and other regular expenses don't simply disappear.
🎓 EDUCATION
For parents planning for their children's education, future college expenses may be part of the financial picture.
💳 DEBTS & OTHER OBLIGATIONS
Outstanding debts and other financial responsibilities may remain.
❤️ FINAL EXPENSES
Funeral and other final expenses can also create costs for a family.
The important question isn't simply:
“How much life insurance should I buy?”
A better place to start is:
“What financial responsibilities am I trying to help my family handle?”
5 QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING THIS SEPTEMBER
You don't need to understand every type of life insurance before talking with an agent.
Start here.
1. Who depends on me financially?
Think about your spouse, children, relatives or anyone else who relies on your income or financial support.
If you're not there, who would feel the financial impact?
2. What financial obligations would remain?
Consider your:
Mortgage
Household expenses
Outstanding debts
Childcare
Education goals
Final expenses
Other ongoing financial responsibilities
Understanding those obligations can help you have a more useful conversation about the amount of protection that may be appropriate for your situation.
3. Do I know how much life insurance I already have?
You may already have:
An individual life insurance policy
Employer-provided group life insurance
Multiple policies
Coverage purchased years ago
Find out what you actually have before deciding what you may need.
Employer-provided coverage can be valuable, but coverage may be limited and may not continue if you leave your employer.
4. Are my beneficiaries still who I want them to be?
Your beneficiary is the person, people or entity designated to receive the policy's death benefit.
Life changes can make this worth reviewing, including:
Marriage. Divorce. A new child. A death in the family. Changes in your relationships or financial plans.
Don't assume your beneficiary information automatically changed when the rest of your life did. Review the beneficiary information associated with your actual policy.
Beneficiary designations and the effect of certain life events may be subject to policy terms and applicable law. If you have questions about your specific situation, consider consulting the appropriate legal or financial professional.
5. Does my current coverage still fit my life today?
Maybe it does.
Maybe your needs have changed.
Maybe you don't currently have life insurance at all.
The purpose of a review isn't to assume you need a new policy.
It's to understand your current situation and make an informed decision.
TERM OR PERMANENT LIFE INSURANCE?
There isn't one type of life insurance that's right for everyone.
Two broad categories you'll commonly hear about are term life insurance and permanent life insurance.
TERM LIFE INSURANCE
Term life insurance generally provides coverage for a specified period.
It may be considered when someone wants protection during a particular stage of life—for example, while raising children or paying a mortgage.
PERMANENT LIFE INSURANCE
Permanent life insurance is designed to provide lifelong coverage, as long as applicable policy requirements are met.
Certain permanent policies may also build cash value over time.
Whole life and universal life are examples of permanent life insurance.
Different policies have different features, costs, requirements and potential benefits.
That's why the conversation should start with your needs—not with a particular product.
DON'T FORGET THE COVERAGE YOU HAVE THROUGH WORK
If your employer provides life insurance, that's worth including in your review.
Ask yourself:
How much coverage do I actually have?
Is it enough for the financial needs I'm trying to address?
What happens to that coverage if I change or leave my job?
Your workplace benefits are one piece of the picture.
Understanding that piece can help you decide whether you want to explore individual coverage as well.
